Electric GT World Series is a new fully electric GT championship that has chosen the Tesla Model S version P85+ as its base model for ten teams that should compete in it’s inaugural season starting in 2017.

The series has been founded by Mark Gemmell, who acts as CEO, and Agustín Payá an engineer and race car driver who will oversee all technical developments and is owner of the championship. “It all started with our desire to accelerate the change to sustainable mobility that will allow us to finally end the fossil fuel age,” said Gemmell.

“It was at the Monaco ePrix last year that we decided to move beyond the exhibitions we where planning and to investigate seriously the possibility of creating a new zero emissions motorsport category.”

“The Electric GT Executive team -I am very proud of- and myself all share the firm belief that it is about time we let everybody know there is a way out of the fossil fuel economy.”

“What promoters of Formula E are doing to spread the word about sustainable mobility is just fantastic. And my admiration and recognition for Elon Musk and everything that Tesla Motors does for the development of sustainable mobility drove me to consider the possibility of creating a championship with the Model S as a promotional platform for technology innovation, sustainable development and fossil fuel divestment. But it was when Agustín and our technical team confirmed that the model S is more than suitable for GT racing that I decided to go global with a brand new motor sport category.”

Best electric GT race car
“It is the best zero emission car on the street capable of racing on world class circuits in the GT category. The commercial version accelerates faster and provides better lap times than many combustion GT cars,” said Payá, Technical Director of Electric GT Holdings, owner and promoter of the championship.

“We chose the Tesla Model S simply because it is one of the best cars ever made, and certainly one of the best 100% electric cars. We are convinced that sharing its impressive circuit racing potential will help to inspire many people towards sustainable transport.”

“Although it is a luxurious super tourer it seems to be made for racing. Its weight distribution and astonishing low center of gravity, despite its considerable mass (more than 2 tons unmodified), allows unbelievable cornering speed, not forgetting its unending torque, which all add up to a great racing car,” continued Payá.

The version chosen as base model for ElectricGT preparation is the Model S P85 and P85+. Although Tesla has more powerful versions on the market with 4WD, the Electric GT Technical Director explains that for the best race circuit action rear wheel drive is even more spectacular and entertaining.

“The Model S is destined to become a GT champion. The fun of the Electric GT category is that we are going to watch commercially available models you can see on the streets racing on circuits around the world. That is the idea, it is our mission to promote sustainable mobility.”

Other cars are welcome
There are of course a couple of other constructors developing fast GT cars like Rimac Automobili that recently presented it’s Concept_S.

“We chose the Tesla Model S as it is a fantastic 100% electric high performance vehicle in mass production for the world market, but we encourage and welcome every car maker to join the Electric GT World Series. It would be fantastic to see other electric supercar manufacturers join the Electric GT World Series,” said Payá.

Just like Formula E, ten teams and twenty cars will race side by side. Only minor modifications will be made to the street version and of course comply with the latest FIA safety standards.

“We are making only small changes to the production Model S P85+ such as improved braking and aerodynamics to increase high speed grip. We will strengthen suspension, braking, cooling, and steering as well as reducing the overall weight. The rest, powertrain, battery, programming, everything is original.”

“We have been testing the car already on the Barcelona Catalunya F1 Circuit as well as the legendary Madrid Jarama circuit, both of which are being used as test and operations centers.”

7 races in 2017
The Electric GT World Series starts in Europe before moving to America and then Asia, not ruling out Ocea. All seven races are held on permanent circuits and the organisers are in negotiation with tracks like Barcelona, Donington, Mugello, Estoril and several others.

  1. I would prefer to see multi make electric endurance racing. Endurance racing could be done by each starter having two cars a la formula e with one being recharged while the other was on the track. Alternatively battery swaps, if this can be done safely (doubts about its safety is why formula E does not use them). Improvements in rapid charging are on the way, it may not be long before a recharge could be done in just a few minutes (under 5), enabling regular charging in endurance races. Endurance racing would be real test and developer of technologies, including charging and efficiency.

    Make against make has always been the attraction in sports and GT racing, I know they intend to get their eventually, but I think it should be sooner. As it stands this proposal seems more like a Porsche GT cup or something, good as a support race but not a headliner.
