With only a few Formula E seats vacant, it seems that drivers are fighting for place in world’s first global electric racing championship. Jérôme d’Ambrosio is one of those talented racers who is keen to race and tested the China Racing Formula E car during recent test days at Donington Park in the United Kingdom.
“Nothing has been decided yet, but my goal is to do the championship”, were his first comments. D’Ambrosio, a 28-year-old Belgian driver, has been successful in numerous single seater championships including Formula Renault, International Formula Master and GP2 Series. He became a test driver for Renault F1, Virgin Racing and Lotus F1 Team the following years and raced 20 Grands Prix. It was only until this year he switched to GT cars, joining the prestigious Bentley brand to compete in the Blancpain Endurance Championship.
“Formula E is a really innovative racing series. It is the future and I would like to be part of a pioneering championship that may be the next step of motor racing”, D’Ambrosio describes his reason why he would like to participate. “I think it’s a great project with running in city centres and the ability for fans to interact as well, which is a new approach to include them. And without fans, the sport doesn’t exists.”
The car is good fun to drive too. “Especially when you go for a faster lap, the car feels good and what Formula E has done is pretty impressive”, he finds.
D’Ambrosio tested one of the China Racing cars, a team that still has two drivers to confirm. As Team Director Steven Lu confirmed to ElectricAutosport.com, the team would not run a Chinese driver at any costs. This would raise the chances of an eager D’Ambrosio.
