The ‘Forze VI’, the sixth hydrogen fuel cell powered electric race car built by students of Delft University of Technology hit the track for the first time. Driver Leo van der Eijk completed three laps at Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands and witnessed this historic moment.

The innovative vehicle, unique of its kind, has been a result of 2,5 years of development. After racing their first go-kart in world’s first competition with hydrogen powered vehicles in 2008, the students have been working on several more powerful race cars to compete in a series like Formula Student. Their current vehicle however, is their first full-size circuit racer.

After setting the pace with only half of the car’s power on an empty track in the evening, van der Eijk told “What an exciting experience, not only for me but for all those students that have worked on the vehicles throughout the years. We’ve worked on this racecar for over two years and therefore it’s a great feeling to hit the track. The laps we did went well and we’re faster than the lap time we wanted to reach. That’s amazing! As students of Delft University of Technology we’re very proud that we can race this car, which is unique in the world.”

Theoretically the Forze VI is capable of producing 100kW fuel cell power and 190kW boost power in total. It can reach a top speed of 210 km/h and reaches 100 km/h from standstill in less than four seconds.

Testing continues on Wednesday at the Belgian Zolder race track to test regenerative braking. The team travels to the Nürburgring on May 7 to prepare themselves to run a track record later this year.
