Nelson Piquet, Sebastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi head into today’s Formula E title deciding season finale in London knowing that one of the three will become the first ever electric racing champion.
There are many permutations that will decide the outcome of the championship, with points also on offer for both pole position and fastest lap. Here is a look at who needs what to take the title.
Piquet goes into the second race of the London ePrix with an advantage of just five points, following Buemi’s dominant win around the 2.9km Battersea Park circuit during race one on Saturday.
This means that the NEXTEV TCR driver can wrap up the title by either taking victory, or if he simply beats both Buemi and di Grassi on track. If, however, the Brazilian is beaten by his nearest rivals in the race, he needs to ensure that he remains within six points of Buemi and 14 of di Grassi.
For Buemi to become champion he has to beat Piquet on track and outscore him by six points. This points gap is equivalent to the difference between 7th – 11th, 6th – 9th, 5th – 8th, 4th – 7th, 3rd – 6th, 2nd – 4th and 1st – 2nd.
For example, if Buemi wins and Piquet is second and neither have taken pole, Buemi will be crowned champion. Of course, if the e.dams-Renault racer claims victory coupled with either pole position or fastest lap that will also be enough to ensure Piquet cannot win the title.
Alternatively, Piquet can afford to finish second behind Buemi, but only if he can take his first pole position of the season. If a situation were to occur where the pair become tied on points (e.g. if Buemi wins with Piquet second – and fastest lap for Piquet with neither on pole), then the championship would be determined by a head to head of most race wins, which currently stands at 3-2 in Buemi’s favour.
If di Grassi were to become the first ever Formula E champion, he needs to outscore Piquet by 14 points and also requires Buemi to score less than 22.
